Welcome to the cradle of arts and science

The City of Jyväskylä, and the University campus with its significant cultural history, take pride in continuing to fly the flag as the Athens of Finland. Here, the valued traditions of Finnish-speaking education meet modern internationalism, and the cherishing of classical civilization is an integral element of this encounter.

In layperson’s terms, Latin is often considered a dead language. On the campus of the University of Jyväskylä, however, Latin is still very much alive. Instruction of Latin at the university dates back over a hundred years, and our students still have the opportunity to graduate in Latin, both at Master’s and at the doctoral level. The language is also alive in music, as there are recordings of both tango and rock in Latin.

The University of Jyväskylä has wanted to extend its research and classical studies to also include the influences of Antiquity. The long development span from classical culture to modern days marks, in this way, our university’s commitment to past, present and also future.

On behalf of the University of Jyväskylä, I would like to extend a hearty welcome to all participants and wish the event the best of success.

Aino Sallinen
