Greetings from the Rector of University of Jyväskylä

This year the University of Jyväskylä is celebrating its 150th anniversary of teacher training in Finnish. The slogan of the celebration year - ahead of its time for 150 years - reflects the aspirations of the University to leave marks in the future and work for the well-being of the future generations.

The predecessors of the University of Jyväskylä, Teacher Seminary and the College of Education, created traditions that still exist at the present day in our teaching and the Christmas and Spring Festival traditions.

Being in the future requires knowing the past and its cultures. There is internationally respected and strong Department of History and Ethnology in the University of Jyväskylä. The Department of Languages' subjects include Culture of the Ancient World and Latin and Greek.

Behalf of the University of Jyväskylä I wish the best of success to the Athenis Finlandiae cultural week.

Matti Manninen
Rector
