The Finnish Ambassador's Greeting from Rome

Ancient Rome and the Latin language have had a vital influence upon European culture. This common heritage binds the European peoples together. For that reason, we have to nurture it and adapt it to the modern European citizen's life style and way of thinking.

Personally, I find it gratifying that the city of Jyväskylä, known as the "Athens of Finland", has undertaken to host the annual event, "Athenis Finlandiae" in order to foster this common cultural heritage by adapting it to our modern life style. Moreover, it is a matter of great interest that, through the Latin language, Finland has made itself known throughout the world and it is even more remarkable that all this originated in Jyväskylä.

Through Latin, Jyväskylä has tapped a huge cultural potential. With cultural tourism, it is possible to see the city as a focus of international attention as well as drawing attention to the beautiful countryside of Central Finland with its richly diverse natural features.
